Periodontal Treatment

Healthy gums support your teeth. An exam helps the team understand what care may be right for you.

Care for the tissues that support your teeth

Gum health is part of your whole-mouth health.

Periodontal care focuses on the gums and supporting structures around your teeth. Changes such as bleeding, tenderness, swelling, or recession are worth discussing with your dental team.

The team can evaluate your gums, explain what it sees, and recommend care based on your findings and history.

  1. Evaluation

Understand the condition before choosing care.

A periodontal evaluation helps identify areas that need attention and gives the team a baseline for monitoring your gum health. Dr. Katie will explain the findings and discuss the next steps with you.

The right care depends on the health of your gums and the amount of buildup present around the teeth.

  2. Treatment

Care may go beyond a routine cleaning.

When recommended, scaling and root planing—sometimes called a deep cleaning—cleans below the gumline. The team will explain the areas being treated, how to prepare, and what to expect afterward.

After treatment, follow-up care may include periodontal maintenance visits. Your recommended schedule depends on how your gums respond and your ongoing needs.

  3. At home

Daily care and follow-up both matter.

Brushing, cleaning between teeth, and keeping recommended follow-up appointments support your gum-care plan. Ask the hygienist to review any technique or tools that would help you reach difficult areas.

Questions patients often ask

Should I mention bleeding gums?

Yes. Tell the team about bleeding, tenderness, swelling, or other changes so they can evaluate your gum health.

Is scaling and root planing the same as a regular cleaning?

It is a different type of cleaning that addresses buildup below the gumline when recommended. The team can explain why it may be appropriate for your mouth.

Will I need ongoing periodontal maintenance?

That depends on your gum health and response to treatment. Your team will recommend a follow-up schedule based on your needs.
